‘#00047 Newborn Quilt’ is a patchwork quilt, made to newborn dimensions. You can wrap the bubs up in it, or tuck them in. The blanket, however, is entirely transparent, made of meat trays and biscuit boxes. This family-heirloom-style is created from 50 x 50mm squares that are carefully sliced and pieced, connected using blanket-stitched fishing line. The edges are unforgivingly sharp, and if you throw the quilt over your shoulders you can hear that plastic crackle.
The artwork is a commentary on the false nature of reusing and recycling plastic and its sinister incorporation into every aspect of our lives. Not only can microplastics be found in blankets and plastic feeding bottles, it has been discovered in the placentas of unborn babies. The very creation of the artwork itself is more than ‘reuse’, it is yet another example of the hidden horrors of microplastics.
